Wooden door expansion

Posted by Kimberley Gill , on
Leaking guttering has been chucking a lot of water onto my front door - so it's expanded and is very hard to open & close. Aside from fixing the guttering what can I do to shrink the wooden door back to fit?

Hi Kimberly, The best answer is to plane it back and then repaint or varnish. The door will shrink back a bit when it dries out but not that much so I would say plane off enough to allow the door to work again but no more. I hope this helps :-) Best wishes Mostafa Bedford Building Maintenance

Hi Kimberley Fix the gutter to stop the water damaging the door. Time should shrink it back to how it was. Beware having too much planed off it as when it eventually shrinks it will not fit properly JC

Obviously you already know what you have to do which is the repair. With regards to the door I would avoid taking anything off the door at this stage And would place some form of safe heating near the door. I did just that recently and It worked very well.

What would you like to do now?
