New Front Door for Porch

Posted by John Wardell, on
I want to replace a 5' sliding patio door with a convetnional front door with side lights. I have been told than I cannot use hardwood as there is no canopy to protect it and it will warp. I have now been told that I cannot use a composite door as it will create a vacuum. I do not want uPVC, so what do I do?

Hi John I can't see a problem with using either of these, you will always get movement with a timber door even if it's covered by a canopy as there is a differance in temperature/humidity between the inside and the outside faces. The exposure of the door will affect the amount of movement, the door needs to be of good quality and the surface treatment kept in good condition. Is the door going in a small area as you talk about a vacuum, although I can't see this being a problem if you used the composite door which are far superior to UPVC. If the door will be in a very exposed spot I would go for the composite as they are far more stable and have the advantage of multi-point locking. Ed
