It can Christine if there is some of the original newel. Put a 25mm dowel down the middle of it and also in the piece you want to add. Drill them both first, glue and knock the dowel in the existing piece, then put glue in the top section and push that on to it. Make sure the holes are dead in the centres, and straight. JC
