Odd sized door

Posted by Lynne Edwards, on
How much can I take off a glazed panel door to make it fit my door is 2010 x 75 cm and I cannot get a door of similar size. If the door is sold as solid wood would it be strong enough to remove enough wood to make it fit. Standard size seems to be 2040 x 813

Hi Lynne you can't remove that amount from each stile of the door it would weaken it too much and you would have issues fitting the handles and latch. It might be better to use a 1981mm x 762mm door and plant a strip on the bottom of the door to bring it to the correct height or the more expensive option is to get a door made to measure. Ed

Hi Lynne, The height isn't a problem as your only removing about 30mm.You would need to take this off the bottom of the door. The width is an issue though. If this is the only door size you can find, then you would be taking approx 32mm off either side. You will probably find this will weaken the mortise joint in the door. It depends on the size of the stiles as to how much of the mortise you cut into. If it's a very small amount you should just get away with it. Your Carpenter/Joiner will be able to recommend the best option. Hope this helps. Joseph
