Front door sticks in winter.

Posted by James Whybra, on
Our front door sticks in the winter but is fine in the summer. (I am guessing due to swelling from the damp weather). What do I need to do to fix this before next winter?

Hi James I am presuming you have a timber door which is probably in an exposed position so is subject to expansion and contraction depending on the weather. First of all check that there is a 3mm gap all around the door (check during dry weather) if not plane to suit, you also need to put a leading edge on the lock edge of the door ( a 2mm bevel that runs down from the face towards the back of the door ) this will provide additional clearance when opening and closing the door. Finally paint or stain the door with a good quality paint ensuring you do the top and bottom edges. Hopefully this will sort the problem out. Ed
