Life Span of softwood sash dormer windows

Posted by Ulrike Koeppl, on
I have two twin dormer sash windows made in softwood approximately 1987 as part of a top floor loft conversion. They have been patched up wit resin and wood about every 6-7 years when scaffolding is erected, but don't seem to last long enough. Can anyone advise please if they might be at the end of their life span? I understand that many original windows's last 100 years, but newer windows don't seem to be made to last. Thanks for any advice.

Hi Ulla it's all down to the quality of timber, modern softwood timber is fast growing and kiln dried and does not stand the test of time. Other factors are the exposure to the elements and regular maintenance with good quality paints, once the paint has started to break down it no longer protects the wood you need to reduce the time between between re-painting .
