Turning a cased opening into a wall with door

Posted by Brian Diez, on
LMy mother inlaw has to move in with us and we are tight on space. We came up with the idea of closing in our " formal living room" for her. The intrance to the living room is a 8' wide cased opening. What we want to do is close off the opening and install a door and make it like a typical bed room. I know I can frame this and sheet rock this very easily but my wife wants it to be put back when she moves out (3 or 4 years later) and doesn't want the dust from the sheet rock in the house. So my idea was to install a door in one side of the opening and build a wall from the latch side of the door to the other side of the opening. Here is where I need the help. What would look good to cover the wall that won't look to out of place. At first I thought about putting a couple book cases to hide the wall but it would take up walk space in the hall. Any ideas on what to use that will look like we are not trying to hide a remodel. Tks

Hi Brian if the opening isn't overly large you could put a pair of doors on and do away with the need to build a wall, relatively easy and cheap to do and could be removed quickly when the mother-in-law leaves. Ed
