External door

Posted by Jack Killingback, on
I posted a carpenter job but only had one response and he said that it was not possible to do. I wanted to remove two panels in an external hardwood door and replace with glass. Do you agree that the only solution is to replace the door completely?

Hi Jack totally agree with what Martin as said the job is possible with care, it's just a case of finding the right person to do it.Ed

Technically it can be done but it depends on how you want the door to look and if you want double glazing. You can use a router to cut out the internal moulding on the door that holds in the wood panel (the corners must be cut out by hand) this allows the wooden panel to be removed. Glass can then be installed and a seperate wood beading be installed to hold it in place (along with glazing sealant). The problems are 1. If you have a stained or varnished door then the new beads won't match in colour 2. If you want double glazing then the rebate on the door probably won't be big enough 3. It's tricky to do and can still look like a poor job when you've had it done. Chances are most joiners won't want to do this job or haven't done as I've described before (I've only done a couple like this)

What would you like to do now?
