Ceiling support cut in two

Posted by Janet Forsythe, on
Previous owners cut a 2 ft section out of the ceiling support beam. Must the entire beam be replaced or can that section be bridged with another section of beam? 14 ft wide room, beam supported by 1 walls and a center support about 3 ft from the section they removed. Old house, "L" support beam with the cut out section on one arm of l, other arm intact.

Hi Janet not sure if your talking about a ceiling beam or a purlin for the roof rafters, ideally a new full length timber needs fitting to ensure adequate support. This is especially important if it is a purlin for the roof as it may sag over time. Ed
