Staircase intallation

Posted by Shuva Dey, on
Hi, I am having a loft conversion done and staircase was installed a month ago. It's a double kite winder staircase made of MDF and Ply. At the time I told builder that the bottom newel post for loft stairs (currently resting haphazardly on first floor) didn't look right. Because only one half of the post is resting on the first floor. The other half is overhanging the first floor. In addition there is a thin strip of wood upon which a small section of the newel post rests and a nail has been hammered in to bottom of post from below. I have two comments and I am no expert but the newel post seems too short hence the wedge beneath it and then the base of the post should be resting entirely on the first floor and not only a half of it. I don't know if this has been explained properly but I have pictures which I cannot upload unfortunately on this site but am happy to forward if anyone wants to see what am I trying to explain. Thanks, Shuva ([email protected])

Hi Shuva its quite common for the newel post to not sit fully onto the first floor landing, but if you are concerned about it you could fix a timber to the side of the existing trimmer joist to increase the bearing. The packer may be there to level up the bottom tread if the landing is out of level or the newel may be slightly short, as long as the packer is not to big it should be easily disguised. Speak to the person who fitted them and express your concerns, they are easily fixed. Ed
