What to put on my fireplace

Posted by Carly Mcgrogan, on
Previously oil stained, I've sanded it back, but it's rely hard to get into all the detailed areas. I'm now at the stage where I want to put something in it. I don't want to paint it as I know once it's painted, getting it back again will be a nightmare. Ideally I'd like the wood to look lighter, but not sure I can achieve this - so, do I varnish Matt, or stain again? And do I use oil or water based. I'm not sure what the wood is, but it's the original fireplace from 1918. Can't seem to make a desicion.. help please!. Thanks very much in advance
