Want to install new Internal doors

Posted by Paula Keane, on
We have a Victorian house and want to change the internal doors with pine four panel doors. Each door is a different size and no shop bought door seems to be an option because of the maximum trim possibility. We do not wish to buy custom made dooors. Our question is this: would a carpenter / joiner be able to get round this problem?

Hi, Most carpenters will know the maximum they can trim off a door. This usually varies from what is stated on Wickes or B&Q doors. That said if you buy solid wood doors you can trim a lot more off them with out the adverse side affects. If you provide a rough measurement I could advise you further. But you should also note that you would be charged more than a standard fitting fee due to the doors having to be altered so much. Hope this helps Scott

The main query is how much of a size difference it is from a standard door. Most internal doors are 6' 6'' high and either 2' 3'', 2' 6'', 2' 9''. The problem with removing too much width makes the stiles look too skinny and if the height is to far out the panels look too odd. Im sure the original house would have had imperial sized standard doors but due to natural movement the heads have dropped and the walls have moved. In answer to the question any true carpenter should be able to amend a standard door but if too far gone then a made to measure door is the answer, especially if you dont want it painted. regards Jon Davis
