Contractor has disappeared without finishing work...

Posted by Marisa Peek, on
I recently used a contractor who is highly rated on this forum to do several items of work. 1) move a radiator 2) tile a balcony 3) supply custom fitted cupboards / shelving. He asked for 50% up front for materials for the cupboard and 10% for the other works. 1) The radiator was completed (although there was a leak after they left, the plumber came back the next day to fix it). 2) The balcony was tiled, but the tiles around the drain hole are angled up resulting in no drainage and water staying on a pool on the balcony. He agreed this was faulty and that he would come fix it, but to please pay for it and the radiator works. I stupidly made full payment for these works. 3) he showed up with ready made cupboards which were the wrong size (depth, inner dimensions agreed, fixed instead of adjustable shelves). When I pointed out that the depth was 10cm less than agreed, he said this was due to heating pipes. He later admitted on email that he had made a change to the design without consulting me because of the materials and pipes for the radiator (he suggested material, his plumber added the pipes). He has not come back in the last 2 weeks and despite asking for a plan, he has not responded at all anymore. Unfortunately I paid by bank transfer. Is there anything I can do other than take him to court? Solicitors have advised me to start a claim. Thank you.
