floor between kitchen and extension is damp. this area was the outer wall originally, before extension was added by previous owner. drains are shared.

If it is where the old wall was, it is because the wall was taken below the original damp proof course . That area of floor must be removed and a DPM installed to prevent damp rising up from the foundation. If it is the whole floor, I would suspect defective plumbing above the slab.
