i have damp in 2 chimney flues on gable wall, 1 is all way up to top,this 1 has liner for oil boiler but not used for 2 years. wall is solid other 1 open fire.

This is ammonium sulphate contamination causing hygroscopic dampness. The internal surfaces of the flues need adequate ventilation to prevent this. There is a point where the contamination is so bad that the external surfaces of the chimney flue need waterproof rendering. This is a very common fault though often mis diagnosed !
