We have dampness on our outside wall on the gable end and it continues down the wall, not rain dependent, happens intermittently. Any ideas what's causing it?

If it is showing on the outside only.... Is it the shape of the chimney inside? If it is like a band of bark bricks along the length of the wall, it is hygroscopic salts in the brick work from previous DPC problems, in both cases humidity will make it worse and will never go away irrespective of rain. Or give me an exact description of what it looks like
