Will Hammerite stick to old gloss?

I have had a steel post made up to support a mailbox and I want to paint it with Hammerite. However some of the post has old gloss paint on top of a primer, which seems pretty sound. I've tried removing some of it with a heat gun but it's slow work. If I rub it down well, will the Hammerite adhere OK, or is it likely to react/bubble off?
