Wall joints cracks

Posted by connie kivell, on
I live in a mobile home -timber frame house. All my walls and ceiling were plasterboarded and then painted as I wanted to make my home look more like a house. After 5 months all the vertical and horizontal joints between walls cracked. The cracks are not deep but very visible. I was told that the joints need to be re caulked. Do you believe that this will be enough? I heard that the joints should have had a tape before being painted in order to avoid cracks and this tape wasn't applied in the first place. Is that correct that a tape should have been put? Will this re caulking job solve the problem and for how long? Thank you very much

we always use the plasterboard tape and then skim the edges with the corner trowel using easy fill. In come cases we also use the decorating fillers, but it is important to let the decorating filler (cork) dry over night even if it says one hour dry. Then before painting with emulation paint, we use oil paint first in order to prevent new cracks. Finally, painted with matching paint. It's a bit time consuming, but its the only way to prevent the cracks from coming back. If using the tapes on the flat are then it must be foddered out with easy fill, then sand and paint. never use decorating fillers on the flat areas. Hope that helps.

Hi there, yeah your right it should have been taped in all the plasterboard joints and screws. Caulk cracks as well a lot of the time so it's not always a good idea to use it all the time. Maybe use easy-fill and use your finger to fill the gap to the walls and ceiling line. Don't use caulk in the middle of the boards on the ceiling they will have to be taped up and filled quite a few times.
