Removing 1940's wallpaper

Posted by Carol Bowker, on
We need to remove painted wallpaper from one wall and only have 2 days to remove it. We think it was put up in the 1950's and has been painted many times. It is a raised pattern and the paper seems thick. A builder recommended we use pva mixed with water and leave for about 15 minutes before stripping it, but I cannot find this advice anywhere. We have a steamer but as the house is old the plaster seems to come off when using the steamer. Please advise.

Chances are the plaster will crumble whatever you do. I recommend you use a product called Dif. Available from Brewers. Score the paper first with a blade or use what is called a paper tiger. Again Brewers will help with this. It creates holes in the paper, then the water and Dif will penetrate better. The old saying is ‘let the water do the work’. Meaning let it soak. Re soak and soak again. Don’t spend time having to scrape hard.
