Hello Carole, The markings showing on your brick work are efflorescence. It is a natural occurrence caused by salt coming out from the materials. A neutralising solution can be purchased on-line or from a builders merchant. Always try the solution on a small area before you apply it to the whole affected area. Hope this helps.
