Is it normal for a contractor to request a 50% payment in advance to secure a job?

Companies will usualy ask for deposit as if customer cancels the contractor could end up being out of work for the timescale of the job canceled We usualy are 30% but if its a smaller job dont usualy take deposit

Some trades do for materials, if I ask for money up front which is rare then I get the client to pay for the materials direct after I've ordered them then get them delivered straight to site
