Wall vent

Posted by Mark Naylor, on
I am in the process of decorating our house which is a property which was built in the 1940s the question I would like to ask is in the upstairs bedrooms there are air bricks in each room due to the property previously having fireplaces downstairs and in one bedroom upstairs in the 2 rooms I have decorated I have replaced the fixed louvre vents with hit and miss ones due to the draft in winter being horrendous in the bedroom I am currently doing the vent was blocked off from the outside with sand/cement I have unblocked it due to damp patches on the wall the house had cavity insulation put in around 10 years ago and now I have noticed outside there are bits of the insulation on the floor outside would it be OK to block off this vent any information would be much appreciated

I would strongly recommend not sealing the vent as this may cause a future issue with condensation and Mould growth due to the lack of cross ventilation. I would recommend filling the hole with a filter medium to prevent the draught but still allow the damp air to escape through atmospheric pressure. The material I use is RS Pro Filter Media G3 Grade , 20 x 1m 14mm available from R S components. Regards Jon Davis
