Lining paper

Can I hang lining paper on top of existing backing paper

Hi Gary While this is possible it is definitely not recommended. The old paper should be stripped and walls prepared to give you the best finish. Some pastes don’t like each other, so for example, if the existing paper was hung with flake paste and you now use ready mix sometimes the pastes can react. Unless you hung the existing paper there is no way to know what paste was used. The biggest problem would be the weight of the new lining paper combined with moisture from fresh paste can cause the original paper to “lift” and “bubble” and they wouldn’t all dry back. Hope this helps Paul
