How do you report a dodgey trader

Posted by Mick Hill, on
I employed a trader found on here, I have paid some money already for a job that should have taken (on his contract of work) 5-7 days, its nearly a month, he has hardly started the job, & is now not returning calls, msgs or emails. What should I do? Thanks.

Hello Mick, the best way to get a refund on an incomplete project is to try and sort out the situation amicably with the contractor, of course i understand you are struggling to get any kind of contact with them but this is by far the easiest solution. Alternatively the only other course of action is to start proceedings within the small claims court. However this can be a long and drawn out process that can be very costly if you do not follow procedure properly. You have to make sure that you give the contractor an opportunity to rectify any poor or incomplete work before starting any proceedings. Please bare in mind that you are only able to claim back any payment for works that haven't been completed, you will not be able to claim back the amount paid for any works that have been completed unless they are of an unsatisfactory or unsafe standard. You will also not be able to claim back the cost of any materials using within that work. Please bare in mind that this process is very much a last resort, it is always a lot easier and less stressful for everyone involved to resolve the issue outside of court. For a full breakdown of procedure and resolution you can find a full article on Which?Legal outlining the correct process and methods to claim back your money. You of course can always leave a review on the contractors Rated People home page which may encourage the contractor to rectify the problem in order to get the review removed. I hope you found this useful and best of luck with your project. - Christopher
