(1) Frequently it is said, “No one reads anymore.” (2) I have read this observation in newspapers and magazines and heard it on television commentaries. (3) And I have heard teachers at my college complain that their students do not even read the work assigned in their text books , much less read for pleasure. But I wonder if this is true. (4) The students I spend most of my time around seem to be reading constantly, and not always just their homework. (5) Reading is a skill beyond price, and I see people profiting from it daily as they move through various types of reading based on the person’s purpose.
(6) The first category can be called required reading. (7) Most people have some kind of regular required reading. (8) At home we sort through mail to find which pieces may be valuable and which are a waste. (9) At work many people have to read office communications, and even service and manual labor jobs post memos and warning notices that employees should read if we want to profit or keep themselves from harm. (10) Of course, students are surrounded by books that they are expected to read and prove that they know on exams.(11) Sometimes we resent the have-to part of this kind of reading, and sometimes just the word “required” makes us want to put it aside. (12)However, there is much to be gained from required reading, and I have often seen that the book that one person drags himself through is happily embraced by another person.
(12) More pleasant for most people is the reading that they choose for leisure and entertainment. (13) Some people enjoy short stories and novels- literature, westerns, romances, mysteries and detective stories, and/or science fiction. (14) Huge bookstores like Borders and Barnes & Noble are filled with people relaxing with their favorite new story. (15) Others prefer magazines that keep them informed about the world, such as Newsweek and National Geographic, about their profession, or about some special interest or hobby. (16) National Geographic channel is also a source of information for many viewers. (17) People read daily newspapers, comic books, and receive letters from friends. (18) Many people find inspiration in the Bible and other religious publications. (19) The World Wide Web offers chat rooms and email, all of which allow people to read and write for fun and knowledge. (20) The greatest difference between reading in this category and that which is required seems to be freedom, the choice to read or not.
(21) The category of reading that is most helpful for many people and that is most enjoyable for me is the practical information found in how-to books and magazines. (22) After reading this kind of material people can immediately apply the knowledge to their everyday lives. (23) For instance, they can learn how to cook delicious food, how to make a beautiful garden, how to take photographs well, and how to decorate a house attractively. (24) Because people have a personal interest, a clear goal, in practical reading, they can concentrate on it more than with much required reading. (25) And I have noticed that, as with some required reading, how-to books can be interesting and fun for many people, moving these books into the more- preferred leisure/ entertainment category.
(26) People read for many reasons, and if they achieve their goal an any category of reading, then it can be said that they have profited. (27) Even the least-preferred type of reading, that which is required, can be beneficial in many ways. (28) It seems to me that people are still much involved with words and pages in books, magazines, and electronic sources, and how could this be otherwise since reading is the foundation of civilization? (29) We may not like to do some kinds of reading, but all the knowledge that exists outside of one person and the people he or she can immediately speak to is contained within books. (30) The Internet, which my generation is growing up with, is a vast library that offers a wealth of words to any who will pause to view them. (31) I think truly that we are still in a reading world.
