Who is liable for wrong advice

Posted by Edward Ng Cheng Hin, on
Electrician was called to rectify repeated blown fuse. Provided details about: 5 sockets and 2 heaters connections. The electrician did not check any of connections instead went staight on the fuse box. Replaced fuse box adding type of box is very old and was cause of fault, To avoid fuse blow up he showed that the fuse holder should be inserted bottom /top first and not all 4 pins at once. Replaced fuse and left. Around half hour later, fuse is blown again. Advised that a new fuse box with circuit breaker is required so that he can check sockets/heaters connections! Advice given without making sure that problem has been identified. Cost for the lot including installation £260. Came back in afternoon and took ages to instal new box. Power is switched and circuit breaker is tripped again. My conclusion there was nothing wrong with old fuse box. Who is liable for the expense of the new fuse box and the installation work? Fault has still not been located

I think the reason the (electrician) has changed your consumer unit is from the description you have given its been old. circuit breakers are easier to reset under fault conditions and quicker than messing about with fuses. obviously this is just an option why he may have carried out the work but my advice would be to get him to come back and check out your installation.

Hi Edward Did you employ the guy from this site? If so you can put a bit of feedback stating this. Have you tried getting him to come back? Any decent electrician wouldn't hesitate to come back and try to sort the problem for you. You should also make sure the electrician is registered to a scheme i e NICEIC or NAPIT etc. If he was you could also complain to them about him. Hope this helps a little Russ
