New Ring Main Installation

Posted by David Brigden, on
I want to wire a ring main into a wooden workshop in my garden. It is close to the house and I intend to take the cabling back to the consumer box in the house. There wil be a small 'garage' consumer unit in the workshop itself. My question is, is it acceptable to run a single cable to the workshop and create the ring main from the local c/u or will the ring need to be direct to/from the main c/u in the house?

This is not a job for a diy person, you need the services of an electrician, plus if you live in england this a job that by law needs to be notgfied to your local building control.

You have to run an armored cable from the main C/U in the house, to the local C/U in the workshop. In the workshop you will have to install the small C/U which has to have a main isolator and two different breakers: one for the ring main and another one for the lighting. You also have to determine the maximum load in your circuit and depending on that you have to choose your cross sectional area of the armored cable accordingly. Hope this helps.
