Power to a planned Summerhouse

Posted by Kurt Bonner, on
Planning to have a Summerhouse in the garden to use as a part-time office. Have a relative willing to take on the job but realise I will need to have it certified. Mainly I wanted to check if what he proposed was correct. The consumer unit is a long run from the garden - so he plans to run armoured cable underground to the SH. At the house end the cable to be terminated as a spur and at the SH end an RCD be installed and then two or three sockets run.(Only small house) The house is 12 yrs old with RCD in the consumer unit. So.. does this seem correct - don't want to have it certified only to find out its incorrect.

Hi Kurt, Not wanting to sound insulting but Is he a quailified electrician or a DIY er who knows a little about electrics? He will need to work out any volt drop on the cable so it can be sized correctly? If the house is already on a rcd and you install an rcd in the summer house you could get issues with your summer house rcd affecting your house rcd. Unless this guy is a fully qualified electrician then personally I would get an electrician to do the job. Easier and much safer in the long run Thanks Russ
