RCD Tripping Problem

Posted by Alan Carter, on
Is there an RCD Consumer Unit that will not trip from an external fault? Its started tripping every night for the past 8 nights between 9:15 & 9:45pm. I'm sure that it's not within my property and likely to be a neighbouring time switch. It resets OK after tripping. My existing unit is an 80 Amp MK Sentinal with a 30ma ELCB. I wondered if I could upgrade to something that wouldn't be affected by an external problem?

How old is your 30mA ELCB? It seems like this might be an old style earth leakage circuit breaker, if so it may be time to get a modern 30mA RCD. Follow Cornelius's advice to identify any problem circuit.

Hi Alan, RCDs or RCBOs are meant to trip if there is a fault between Line and Earth or Neutral and Earth. I can't understand how come your RCD can be affected by one of your neighbors' timer switch, unless he is somehow connected at your electrical installation. I'd recommend you to check all the outdoor lights (patio lights, floodlights, etc.) because the problem might be caused by a movement sensor. Before 9:15pm, turn off the circuit breakers for the external consumers one by one (first night, turn off only the breaker which controls the lights outside, next night try another circuit and so on) and see what happens. If the RCD won't trip anymore, the fault is onto the circuit which you had it switched off. Hope this helps! Cornelius Cretu
