Light Switch Change

Posted by Scott Bullock, on
I want to change my old 1 gang 1 way light switch for a new 1 gang 1 way light switch due to the old 1 is covered in paint and it looks awful, i have removed the old switch from the wall and I have 2 cables inside, 1 cable with 1 red wire going to common and the other cable with a red and a black wire going to the bottom 2 terminals (they aint labelled). my question is this: on my new switch all terminals are labelled. would i be right in thinking the cable with the single red wire goes to common and the cable with the red wire goes to the terminal labelled 1 way and the black wire goes to the terminal labelled 2 way?

Hi Scott As Cony says it sounds like a 2 way.If it was a 1 way it would only have 2 cores either twin red or red and black If this is the case the red in the common will stay in the common on the new switch. The other 2 will go into L1 and L2. The black wire should have red sleaving on as its a live conductor. If your in any doubt at all dont touch it and call an electrician in Thanks Russ
