Hi Jeff, If you only replace the down lighters (like for like) you don't have to replace the fuse board. But if you're having your kitchen redone, then it might worth fitting as new consumer unit which with the new regulations must be made of metal (or non combustible materials). Regards,
It is advisable to add RCD protection to any modified circuit in a domestic premise. This may be more practical to do through a new consumer unit as each circuit in the installation can be RCD protected. Alternatively it may be possible to replace a circuit breaker with an RCBO for just the one light circuit modified, on a 16th edition board. However this will depend on what type of fuseboard or consumer unit you already have. I suspect you may add sockets in your kitchen, so these would also require RCD protection. If you have an old rewireable fuseboard, it is advisable to get a modern board with RCD's in my opinion. RCD's can and do save lives. regards Andrew
