Loop wiring 2 way lighting

Posted by Sam Cockerill, on
2 way loop wiring issue. 6 hall way lights, 5 up (new from ikea) 1 down (original). 2 switches, 1 up 1 down. The centre light ceiling rose has 4 cables feeding (not including the light fitting). I have taken this apart without noting how it was ordered before. I cannot find the right combination of wires. I have used an electrical test meter to find the switch/live wire. however i cannot wire the them in without tripping fuses. the best case scenario is the bottom switch working for the bottom light only.

Hi Sam, Them 4 cables in the ceiling might be: 1- feed in, 2- feed out, 3-switch line, 4- loop to another light fitting or 1- feed in, 2-switch line, 3and4-loops to other light fittings or 1- switch line plus neutral, 2,3,4- loops to other light fittings (if the feed is run in the switch). If you can see there are different ways of wiring a lighting circuit. Best thing to do would be to call an electrician. It would save you a lot of time and effort. Regards,
