RCD protection

Posted by L Martin, on
I want to replace a cabinet in my bathroom which has a light on it and also a socket in the bedroom which has cracked. i have been told the replacement socket must be of the built in rcd type and the circuit for the bathroom must have rcd at the fuse board due to new regulations. is this the case?

Hi Len, That's not true, you can replace that cracked socket in your bedroom with an ordinary socket. The RCD protected sockets are meant for outdoor use. In the bathroom, if the light fitting enclosed in the cabinet it's specifically designed for bathrooms, you don't need and RCD. The new regulations are for new builds and any major changes to the old electrical installations. In your case, you're only replacing a light fitting and a plug socket. If you really want, you can upgrade your fuse board to an RCD protected consumer unit and thus all your circuits will be RCD protected. Regards,
