Fuse switch tripping

Posted by Erica Shevlin, on
A fuse blew on us that is linked to the kitchen. Its a 15amp fuse that we replaced with a 16amp as it is an old fuse and that's what Screwfix recommended. The dishwasher was on and the oil radiator and when I boiled the kettle it tripped the switch. Any advice?

Good evening Erica, It sounds very much like whoever wired your kitchen did it as a radial circuit (ie, the sockets all run from one piece of cable) hence the reason for it being powered by a 16amp fuse. The total power used by a dishwasher, oil radiator and a kettle all at the same time will be more than 16 amps so to be honest I'm not in the slightest surprised it tripped the switch. You have two options really, the first is get an electrician to check the existing wiring and if possible change the wiring to being a ring so that a larger fuse can be fitted. or secondly, the much cheaper option is to not turn all three appliances on at the same time. I must stress that you must not simply increase the fuse size larger than the existing 16amps without first professionally checking the circuit is able to support it, doing so would be a potential fire risk as it could cause the wiring in the circuit to overheat to dangerous levels. I hope that helps Kind Regards Steve
