Spot lights

Posted by Stephanie Clark, on
At the beginning of my loftextention I asked the builder for spot lights.'no problem'he said. When I climbed up ,there were no spot lights, but a wire in the middle. When I asked him,he said it can not be done, because of the new regulation by the council. They have to put double insulation, which can make the wire hot and I have to change the bulbs regularly because they would not last long.I have to constantly change them.I pointed out to Him,that He never explained that to me but went ahead and did it ,supposedly with my best interest in mind. What is my best option?Every time I question him,he gets upset ,that I don't trust him.

Hi Stephanie, Your builder talks nonsense. When running cables through insulation thicker than 100mm you have to take into account the length of the run, the load and the type of installation. If you'll install LED spot lights that means the load is quite small. For example to run 10 5Watts LED bulbs you'll have a load of 50 watts which means a current of 0.2 Amps for all the spotlights. A 1.5mm2 cable can safely run your 10 spotlights even the insulation is 1 meter thick. Regards,
