A live neutral wire

Posted by Jean Russell, on
I have found that there is a neutral wire which is live on my downstairs ring main and I don't know why

Hey Jean, without testing the installation all we can offer is speculation. I suggest that you get a competent electrician out in order to test you're home electrical circuits to discover the cause. With Live-Neutral reverse faults, the installation will work normally, but it is a serious electrical fault that should be put right as soon as possible Thanks, Richard Baldwin (Trydanwyr Bright Spark Electricians)

Hi Jean, Both Neutral and the Line wires are considered LIVE wires when energized because the Neutral is a returning path for the Line wire through the consumers (sockets, light bulbs, appliances, etc.). The voltage indicator may give you false indications so make sure that you use a proper meter to check the voltage between all conductors including the earth conductor. If there is no voltage between the brown and the green and yellow, that means the polarity is reversed in one of the sockets or in a junction box

Jean, A worrying find! A probable cause could be a live and neutral switch at another point in the ring main. This is a serious fault and I urge you to get it fixed!
