Hi Stephen First and foremost this will almost certainly be notifiable work, also outside installations pose particular risk, as such I must emphasise that this job should be completed by a registered electricians. To answer your question. It depends on what you plan on using. For general sockets and lights a 20amp supply should suffice. This should be taken from a spare non RCD protected way in your consumer unit, you would then run SWA cable via an isolator down to a small consumer unit in the workshop with an RCD incomer. This ensure that a fault in the outside installation won't affect the house. If workshop is remote from house I would recommend using an earth rod instead of exporting the house earth. If there are services (such as water) in workshop these will need to be adequately bonded. It is important the the SWA sheath is earthed at house end, but equally important that this earth is isolated at workshop end if using an earth rod, so that you can't come into simultaneous contact with two different earths. Practically this is done by using a proper SWA gland at house end and a large stuffing gland at shed end. All that is left then is to run final circuits in workshop and Most importantly test for safety.
