Cooker Switch Blown after plastering

Posted by Matthew Buckley, on
Having a new kitchen fitted and have moved some of the electrics around. This was all working fine and tested. Have now plastered in where new wires were chased into the walls and around the back boxes. Stupidly switched on the cooker socket after plastering and as soon as switched the switch on it tripped the rcd, and sparked from the switch. Will this have destroyed the switch/socket and is it likely to be from the wet plaster or a more serious issue (damage to cable for example). Is there a chance it will dry out and be fine?

Hey Matt, Given that it has been tested prior to the plastering I would assume it is wet plaster causing the problem. Best to let it dry and see if the problem persists. The RCD functioned as it should have to prevent any serious damage, best to investigate behind the cooker switch after the plaster has dried to see if there is any damage to the insulation of the cables or indeed the switch. In that case I would seek help from an approved and competent electrician to investigate and rectify any problems Hope this helps Thanks, Richard Baldwin (Trydanwyr Bright Spark Electricians)

Hi Matt Turn the cooker circuit off and undo the switch. Check for damaged cable. It may have been nicked when the switch was screwed back. If in any doubt seek a electrician. It sounds like it will be something really minor. Better still get the electrician back who wired it all. Thanks
