Fused Spur for Cooker Hood

Posted by Scott Bullock, on
I would like to install a FCU above a socket in my kitchen for a cooker hood installation, I want to take the supply for the FCU from the socket directly underneath but this socket is already supplying a spur socket so is it possible to use the same socket for the FCU aswell as the existing socket it is already supplying.

Hi Scott Its not good practice to run multiple spurs from one socket location What you need to do is get an electrician to extend the ring at that point and make the isolation switch part of the existing ringmain its a simple enough job Hope this helps Tom

Hi Scott First and foremost this should be done by an electrician, who will be able to properly assess the existing arrangement, and has the tools and knowledge to complete job safely. I assume the cooker you are tooling about has a total load of less than 3kw, otherwise it will not be suitable for an FCU. As general rule, assuming the circuit is a ring you can have no more Spurs than the number of sockets on the actual ring. So in theory one socket can supply two Spurs, however you would need to make sure the terminal capacity is not exceeded otherwise you will not get a good connection which will cause arcing and heat.

What would you like to do now?
