Light switch replacement

Posted by susan , on
I have wired a few light switches, but this one set has me stumped (prior home owners work was questionable). Two light switches, both single light controls (at least as far as the light switch design shows). 2 wires coming in. No ground as this is an older home. Best guess is that power is starting at the light and coming down to the switch. The confusion is 1 of the white wires is not being used. The other black goes to the right switch. The other black wire that comes in is from the other switch. The other switch has a white and black coming in, the black wire is shared with the other switch. I want to replace the switches with updated fixtures, but safely. What wires should go where?

First option: Call an electrician Secondly: if you managed to change the switches make sure they are not metal plate (golden, chrome, etc). With no cpc (earthing conductor) only insulated plate switches are allowed.

If you have no earth and you have old style colours then that is a indication that the house needs Rewired . Under current legislation you shouldn't be carrying out any work unless you are a qualified EIectrician I would suggest you get a condition report done ASAP as your wiring sounds very dangerous. Hi susan You have a live feed in 2 switch returns out and the live services both switches with a little linkout wire, you also have whats called a strapper which connects your 2 way lighting if im understanding your description These will change like for like into a new switch If in doubt call an electrician out....i would also suggest getting tour wiring checked out to ensure its safe Regards Tom
