Electrician damaged wall

Posted by Adam , on
I've had several single sockets replaced with doubles and in order to do this the electrician has left huge cracks, gaps and holes around the new sockets. He has said that this damage is inevitable in this kind of job. Is it reasonable for this work to cause so much damage? No warning was given before the work. I've had sockets replaced before and it was fine. And I can't find anything online that tells you to expect this with what I thought was a simple job.

Old walls can have different type of plastering(finishing), some walls are made from sand and very little cement. It is inevitable on that kind of wall to not have any cracks. If your house is older than 60 years then you have to accept this collateral damage. The electrician focuses on electrical works. It is not his fault if some small areas of the wall fells down when he makes the channel or the holes for sockets. I would recommend to both client and trade man to discuss all the job's aspects before starting.

Hello Adam Unfortunately this does happen depending on your wall construction, if it is solid walls you do have to chase the boxes to fit Plasterboard walls normally your able to cut the correct size without any problems maybe a small anoint of caulk or paint needed to touch up if the walls have been skimmed with multi finish plaster. But a major point is to keep your customer informed of what is going to happen and what to expect before commencing any work and if you encounter any problems with the job to stop and notify them first. Communication is a good factor when your self employed Regards Andrew Murray Haig electrics Scotland

If it's a solid plastered wall the wall has to be chased to allow enough space for the new double back box to be installed , so it is normal to have cracks that need re plastered . However if it is a hollow partition wall , the sockets can be cut out without leaving and cracks .
