Extending armoured cable

Posted by Gareth Lewis, on
I have built a wall in which I have run through armoured cable. At intervals I have run the cable out of the wall to have 4 up/down lights fitted. The shortest exposed cable is around 6 inches, which I have been told is not long enough. The electrician who told me this was doing some other works at the property and frankly I got the impression he wasn't interested in doing the work. I am keen to know if 6 inches is long enough to connect up the lighting and if not, can the cable be extended? The cable is 6.0mm 3core Steel Wired Armoured (SWA). Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi Gareth 6 inch won't be enough as the you need to fit a brass gland before you can terminate. You can easily extend using jointing kits but these will need to be hidden prob behind your wall. You may also find that your lights won't have capacity to terminate armoured cables into. You will need to terminate into a weather prof enclosure and flex out off this to your light. Hope this helps

Hello Gareth, I am apologise ,however, I have not get message about the scenario. The most of light fittings have terminals suitable to terminate 1mm , 1.5mm or may be 2.5mm core. You are mention that you have there 6mm SWA cable. The SWA cable is not flexible as PVC and therefore require longer cable to deal with terminate the cable proper way. Special cable SWA gland are required to terminate the cable. My feeling is that 6inch is not enough in 6mm size cable. Any cable is possible to extend but when you need extend 3 core 6mm SWA cable about for example 2-3 inches that is possible in the theory. In real life will be probably difficult to find some one to do that.
