Does my electric fireplace need inspecting before 1st use

Posted by Edward Fordham, on
I have just bought a house that comes with an electric fireplace. Do I need to have it tested by an electrician or is it safe to just turn it on and see if it works?

Hello It is hard to say without looking at the fire. Is there a separate circuit breaker in the consumer unit for the fire? If not then the fire may be wired into the sockets of the room. In any case turn off the circuit breaker and perform the following checks Does the fire look like it has been through the wars? How is the fire connected to the mains? Does it have a 13A Plug and is plugged into a socket or is it wired into a switch with a fuse? You may need to pull the fire out to see how it is connected. In both connections check the fuse. The fire should be fused with a 13A fuse. Is the cable from the fire in good shape? Look for any frayed, burnt or bare wires. If you are still unsure then by all means get a qualified electrician in to have a look. Geoff Edwards GJ Electrical
