Hi Phill, Without seeing this in person I cannot say with 100% certainty that what advice I'm offering is correct and also that I would only recommend that a fully qualified electrician deal with any electrical installs in your property no matter how small the work is. with that out of the way it sounds like your new fan has three terminals which should be L- Live N- Neutral E- Earth your ceiling rose should have four same as above and except now L- Switch live Loop- Permanent live Long story short in the most case the reds are live and the blacks are neutral Except for that one black wire that you have said is on the other side that Black one should in fact be a 'switch live' so.... the Reds (Live) : All connected together *NOT to the fan* The Blacks *except for the one discussed* (Neutral) : all together and connected to the 'N' on the fan and finally The single Black *which should be labelled with a black or brown sleeve* (Switch live): connected to the 'L' of the fan and then obviously all the earths connected to the earth terminal on the fan Once again I really advise that you get someone qualified to carry out this task but if you so decide to do this please be advised that if this is done wrong and if you have an old fuse box you'll blow the fuse and would have to replace the wire in order to get all your lights running again I hope this helps Steve
