Replacing electric oven - importance of 13amp versus 16amp

Posted by John Aldam, on
I am having my Consumer Unit brought up to date, because I wish to replace my electric oven and I believe some ovens require 16-amp rather than 13-amp. The cooker has a separate cable from a switched block on the wall of the kitchen back to the consumer unit, separate from any 13amp ring main. My question is: how do I know whether the existing cooker supply cable and the (not yet installed) new consumer unit are OK for a 16-amp cooker?

The electrician that is replacing your consumer unit will be able to tell you. He or she will have to test all the circuits anyway for certification and mark them up accordingly.
