New thermostat fitted to Immersion heater but not working

Hot water cylinder and immersion heater 3kw installed and worked fine for a month then thermostat (14amp) kept tripping and having to be reset
I noticed thermal damage to live wire going into the Immersion heater . Opened thermostat and it was burnt at one end.
Bought a new thermostat 15amp .I stripped damaged live wire and re wired. Tested but Immersion heater not heating water so not working
The timer works and no thermal damage detected there
Original Consumer unit fused at 15amp and works but has never tripped.
What else can I check?
