Rewire a living room - how long should it take and how much?

We need to sort the electrics in our living room, The electrics kept tripping on the living room ring and the main fuse in the consumer unit. An electrician has been to change a rusty socket and back box in the living room but the main fuse has continued to trip if the living room circuit is switched on. He disconnected one of two earth wires going to the socket, assuming they were on a ring and that one of them was faulty. He has since told us that he doesn't know for sure if it's a ring or a spur circuit. Consequently, he told us to keep the living room circuit off as it may not be earthed and in any case if the living room circuit is switched on the electrics trip out straightaway, so that hasn't fixed it. We've now be told it'll be a two day job to rewire the whole living room and cost £500, with trunking having to be used between consumer unit and living room as we have solid floors between them. Does this sound about right? Our home is very small so we need to minimise disruption. Difficult to stay somewhere else for a couple of days in the pandemic- for us and pets!
