Fridge freezer too far away from socket for cable to reach

My mum needs a new fridge freezer but would be approximately 8 feet from appliance to plug. is it safe to use a normal extension lead? Her current appliance looks to have what she described as a joiner (small white box) which was joined onto the original lead to elongate it, Is it a safer option to have this fitted?
