Does an electric car charger have to be on its own totally dedicated c

Hi All, grateful of any help here, and apologies for any incorrect terminology!
I'm having some electricians in at the minute to quote for a job. I'm planning on running power to my detached garage. Currently just want to run from the main board to a small consumer unit at the garage end, and then have two circuits for lights and sockets.
But I thought about speccing up the cable so that in future, I could upgrade to a bigger consumer unit and the same supply could also be used for an electric car charger - seemed silly to install cable that might have to be upgraded within 5 years!
I've had multiple quotes, but today one guy mentioned something none of the others had said. He told me what I was thinking wouldn't be allowed - if I wanted an electric car charger it would have to be on its own totally dedicated run from the main consumer unit.
I have friends who have fully installed and signed off installations where this isn't the case - one has a supply running to his garage into a 4-way consumer unit for lights, sockets and 2 EV chargers.
Can someone please confirm if what today's electrician told me is correct please? Thanks in advance!
