Restoration of sanded floorboards

My sisal rug has left a sticky residue measuring 8 ' by 5' on my varnished floor boards - caused by the disintegration of the rug's backing. I don't know whether it can removed then the boards re varnished or whether the whole floor will need to be sanded again.
